Salsa and Latin Dance in Schools

Since last year Salsa Beat has been teaching in schools both Primary and Secondary, as part of the P.E curriculum. Director of Salsa Beat, Ivan Garcia states,

"Teaching my own children inspired me to undertake specific training in this area of dance. Since then I have undertaken work as part of the P.E curriculum, in the form of regular classes, one off workshops, and part of cultural events. This has received a fantastic response from pupils and teaching staff. Children really engage with the music and dancing, even the boys! They are fascinated in particular with aspects of the Latin American culture, and I always incorporate time within the workshops to talk about, and answer questions about Mexico and the Latin culture in general. I also incorporate the Spanish language, giving names to the steps and routines as well as counting the beats. I find this method extremely effective as it provides an all round learning experience for the children".

Salsa within the P.E curriculum;

  • Develops social skills and respect for others
  • Encourages and inspires pupils who may not be interested in competitive sport to engage in exercise and increase fitness levels
  • Tackles obesity
  • Develops and tests memory/concentration skills
  • Helps to increase self-esteem
  • Encourages boys to take part in dance
  • Improves team work and co-operation
  • Gives pupils the opportunity to express themselves through dance and physical activity
  • Promoting diversity and cultural inclusion

Salsa Beat is available for regular classes, cultural events, and one off workshops as well as performances, and will tailor your workshops to suit your individual requirements. A syllabus of learning is provided for every course. An initial free taster session is offered so each school can experience a workshop, with no obligation to book further classes. "Thank you for a wonderful day of 'Salsa' which everyone thoroughly enjoyed!Your lessons had pace and you immediately established a good relationship with all our pupils. By the end of the session all classes were buzzing with Salsa music,rhythm and dance!The evening 'social event' was just as good, from the quality of the Mexican food that you prepared for us, to the way you broke down the social barriers of boys and girls dancing together."

Deputy Headteacher of Abercromie School

"Dear Ivan, I would like to thankyou for coming into our school and giving us a taste of what it is really like in Mexico and also how to dance. Through the day you gave each class the opportunity to experience the unmissable salsa lessons. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and we keep our fingers crossed hoping you will come again."
